The National Association of Rocketry invites you to NARAM 67, the 67th annual meet of the National Association of Rocketry. First held in 1958, NARAM is the highlight of the competition rocketry calendar, and is where National Champions have been crowned for decades. With the recent surge in interest in Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) flying his year’s event will feature the NARAM Cup, an FAI sanctioned international cup meet, and will also serve as the Team Selection event for the Team that will represent the United States at the 2027 FAI World Spacemodeling Championships in Poland.

NARAM kicks off on Sunday, June 28 with registration, flyer briefings, turn-in for craft events, and fellowship. Flying will begin on Monday, June 29, and continue through Thursday, July 2. A separate, dedicated sport range will be open on Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30. Additional sport flying may be accommodated on the contest range after this as the flow of competition flying allows.

NARAM 67 will take place at the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana, the finest dedicated aeromodeling facility in the world. Contest flying will be on AMA Flying Site 4 all four days, and sport flying will take place on Site 1 Monday and Tuesday only. No FAA waiver will be in place for this event, but Class 1 rockets up to G impulse are welcome to fly.

We encourage all flyers to register before online registration closes on Wednesday, June 24. In-person registration will be available on the flying field during NARAM.

Some truly special evening activities are planned, including classics like the Cannon Auction, which raises funds to support the NAR’s core education mission, Scale Model Viewing opportunities, and the annual Awards Banquet. In addition, Vern Estes will be launching his long awaited book on the early history of Estes Industries, “Dear Mr. Estes,” and will be on hand to sign copies.

There will also be a special panel discussion with industry leaders Mallory Langford, Gary Rosenfield, and Bill Stine, "From Hobby to High-Tech: Innovation and the Future of Sport Rocketry.” Mallory, Gary, and Bill will offer their thoughts on the potential trajectory our hobby might take in the coming years as they discuss both challenges and opportunities facing the entire rocketry community. You won’t want to miss any of these exciting events, so plan to attend NARAM 67 now!

Sport Flying

Model/Low Power sport flights will be hosted by ROCI (NAR section 625) and AMOREA (NAR section 540) at Site 1 Monday and Tuesday only. No FAA waiver will be in place for this event.  Limited sport flying will be available at the competition range on a non-interference basis July 1st and 2nd. Sport flyers are strongly encouraged to complete sport flights at Site 1 on June 29th and 30th.  Sport flying will require significant volunteer participation, see the sign-up link for available slots.

No sparky motors, and no motors greater than G impulse, are permitted to be flown. Permitted motors must be NAR-certified with an average thrust not greater than 80 Newtons, and maximum total impulse not greater than 160 Ns. Make sure the total installed motors for clustered and multi-staged rockets stays within the allowable maximums for low power flights.

Spectator Information

Situational Awareness. Objects often fall from the sky, sometimes at a very high speed. We have rules and procedures to make this activity as safe for everyone as possible, but things can happen if the rules are not followed. Everyone attending must understand and follow these rules to ensure safety.

  • Pay attention. Every flight is potentially dangerous to you and your family. If the Launch Control Officer (LCO) yells “Heads up!” he means it.
  • If you hear “Heads Up” and/or an air hornblasting, it means that a rocket, or parts of it, is falling into the spectator/parking area. GET UP, SCAN THE SKY, and make sure that you or the people near you are not under the falling object!
  • Parents please keep your children under control and are sure they understand these rules.
  • Pets; can we bring our dog? Rockets are often very loud; many dogs are very frightened of these loud, fast-moving objects. If Fido is accustomed to rockets then you may bring him LEASHED, and be prepared to clean up after him.
  • Use of Radio Control—R/C rocket-boosted glider flights originating from the either the main range or S8 flying area should leave the area directly over the range or spectator areas following the boost phase of flight so that other models may be launched. R/C model flights that are not part of NARAM competition or sport rocket activities shall not be made near the ranges or spectators. All R/C flyers shall be familiar with and in compliance of all FAA UAV regulations including TRUST certificate and registration markings if required on aircraft.
  • Please stay behind the flagged flight line barrier, and do not set up your chairs, etc. at the barrier.
  • If the LCO announces a flight as a “Heads Up” flight, that means get on your feet and pay attention until the rocket’s recovery device deploys, or until the rocket is on the ground.
  • Do not attempt to catch any rocket as it lands.
  • Do not pick up or move any rocket that is not yours, unless you have the owner’s permission.
  • Park your vehicle in the designated parking area.
  • Please keep control of your trash and help us to keep the property clean.

NARAM is a Carry In, Carry Out Event

Schedule of Events

We have sport flying available at its own range (separate from the contest range) for two days of our on-field schedule. This has been made possible with the help of several sport flyers who have volunteered for sport range duties. But they can use your help - if you plan to sport fly please sign up for sport range duties.
